LApm9 posted this 24 October 2022. I had a puzzling experience with my .45-70 reduced loads today and would appreciate any analysis of the situation that you may be able to offer. The bullet vendor offered a table of loads supposedly supplied by Lyman. The bullet is said to be Lyman #457130 (150 gr.).MP-5744 was a double-base military powder, made by Hercules. The Army didn't like it. When it hit the surplus market, it turned out that it worked well for cast bullet loads in large volume cases such as .30-06 and .45-70, without needing fillers. BPCR guys ate it up.That test included the 45-70 cartridge. Be aware that Tin Star powder has a burning rate faster than Unique and I do not advise on a "50% rule" in large cases such as the 45-70. The 45-70 test I did used a hard cast commercial bullet purported to be 405 gr but actually weighed 413 gr.
