NOAA precipitation frequency estimates serve as the de-facto standards for designing, building and operating infrastructure to withstand the forces of heavy precipitation and floods.

Purple colors show areas where precipitation will increase, while orange areas indicate less future rain and snow. CMIP5 RCP8.5 multimodel average percent change in total precipitation (rain and snow) between 1981-2000 and 2081-2100. Uses one run for each model, 38 models total. Data from KNMI Climate Explorer; map by Carbon Brief.Over time, enhancements and improvements to the program led to a completely new product, called the Hydro-estimator, which is currently in operational use by the National Weather Service for monitoring potential flash flood events. Precipitation rates are primarily based on the cloud top temperature obtained from GOES 12 and GOES 10 (10.7 micron). We utilize the National Weather Service's Quantitative Precipitation Estimates (Figure 4) to help fill in the gaps between our stations and to paint the bigger picture. This data set utilizes a multisensor approach to estimate precipitation including radar, satellite, and rain gauge data. The first 24 hours are often preliminary and can ...IOWA — Here are estimated rainfall totals for central Iowa and across the state as of 7 p.m. Tuesday. The radar over the last 24 hours has estimated more rain than many areas of the state since June. Des Moines has not seen an inch of rain in a 24-hour period since June 22.In addition, the precipitation intensity estimated using the MLP-2 model agrees with the ground radar estimates better than the standard product does. Figure 2. Open in figure viewer PowerPoint (a–c) Sample rainfall rate estimates from ground-based KMLB radar and spaceborne Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation …Accurate estimations of local precipitation are necessary for assessing water resources and water-related disaster risks. Numerical models are typically used to estimate precipitation, but biases can result from insufficient resolution and incomplete physical processes. To correct these biases, various bias correction methods have been developed. Recently, bias correction methods using machine ...View Fullscreen . Data Displayed. In the window above, the Cesium viewer shows the latest 30-minute, 1-day, and 7-day precipitation accumulations from the IMERG product. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) TRMM was a research satellite in operation from 1997 to 2015, designed to improve our understanding of the distribution and variability of precipitation within the tropics as part of the water cycle in the current climate system. By covering the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the Earth, TRMM ...Scrutinizing Figures 2a-2c, it is also found that the PR precipitation estimates from the MLP-2 model is smoother and more realistic compared to the standard TRMM product, which is more scattered. In addition, the precipitation intensity estimated using the MLP-2 model agrees with the ground radar estimates better than the standard product does.Abstract. In this study we propose and demonstrate a data-driven approach in an "information-theoretic" framework to quantitatively estimate precipitation. In this context, predictive relations are expressed by empirical discrete probability distributions directly derived from data instead of fitting and applying deterministic functions, as is standard operational practice. Applying a ...Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) is intended to provide a "best" estimate of quasi-global precipitation from the wide variety of modern satellite-borne precipitation-related sensors. Estimates are provided at relatively fine scales (0.25 × 0.25 , 3-h) in both real and post-real time to accommodate a wide range of researchers.Forecast/Future Precipitation. Forecasts of future precipitation are derived from weather models and from forecaster judgment. Although accuracy of precipitation forecasts can vary from weather system to weather system, such forecasts are important for river forecasts.Because the passive microwave-based precipitation estimates are not available prior to August 1987 likely causing temporal inhomogeneity in percentiles across 1988 in the GPCP analyses (e.g., Gu and Adler 2018), the focus hence is on the period of 1988-2021. We perform the analysis over tropical land and ocean separately, in addition to land ...These data are critical for precipitation estimates, hail estimates, storm motion, and early detection of tornadoes, ice, snow, flash floods, and destructive wind. Further, NEXRAD data contribute to weather forecasts and warnings, air traffic control, and the management of water, agriculture, and forests, among other uses.Rainfall estimates have relevance in meteorology, hydrology, agriculture and climate change studies. Near real-time accurate rainfall information at fine spatial and temporal scale is important in ...These precipitation estimates are based substantially on radar which samples over a large area. Each grid value on the maps represents average precipitation over roughly 16 km2 (6¼ mi2). Radar values may not be comparable with one or more rain gauges within that area. Radar sampling errors that can create inaccuracies in the data include ...USGS Rainfall Calculator. January 28, 2016. View Web Tool. Find out how much rain has fallen—how many gallons have come down from the skies onto your roof, yard, block, or town. The rainfall estimates obtained from the corrected reflectivities were Z C = 200R 1.6 and Z C = 434R 1.17. These results are compared in Fig. 9 d. Most of estimated rainfall rates were more underestimated for the radar than for the raingauge measurements, especially for values above 13 mm/h. The estimates based on the corrected reflectivities ...In this study, the accuracy of CMORPH, CMORPH-CRT, PERSIANN and PERSIANN-CDR satellite precipitation estimates (SPEs) were evaluated over the Omo-Gibe River Basin in Ethiopia across 10-year period from 2007 to 2016. The evaluation was performed at various temporal (daily, monthly, seasonal and annual) and spatial scales (point to pixel and basin scale aerial averaged precipitation) against ...Reliable ground-based precipitation measurements are difficult to obtain because most of the world is covered by water and many countries don't have precise rain measuring equipment (i.e., rain gauges and radar). Precipitation is also difficult to measure because precipitation systems can be somewhat random and evolve very rapidly. During a storm, precipitation amounts can vary greatly over ...1. Introduction. Probable maximum precipitation (PMP) is defined by the World Meteorological Organization as “the greatest depth of precipitation for a given duration meteorologically possible for a design watershed or a given storm area at a particular location and time of year, with no allowance made for long-term climatic trends.”Moving water from gutters to the ground is a necessary chore. Rain chains are the perfect blend of form and function because they do it with style. Expert Advice On Improving Your ...

Despite overall dryness, there were notable rainfall events throughout the month. Heavy rainfall across the Ohio River Valley on September 4-5 resulted in flash flooding and at least one fatality in southern Indiana, with radar-estimated precipitation of 5-8 inches (127-203 mm) falling in Jefferson County, Indiana.Rain Bird sprinklers are a popular choice for homeowners who want to keep their lawns looking lush and green. Earth rainfall climatology Is the study of rainfall, a sub-field of meteorology. Formally, a wider study includes water falling as ice crystals, i.e. hail, sleet, snow (parts of the hydrological cycle known as precipitation ). One of the more widely used products that the WSR-88D radars produce are the precipitation estimation products. These products give an estimate of how much rainfall has occurred over an area for a given time, and are often used to help forecasters issue timely warnings for flash flooding. The simplest precipitation instrument is a rain gauge, which is a cyli Next-Generation Radar (NEXRAD) has become an integral component in the estimation of precipitation (Kitzmiller and others, 2013).
